28 Years Later - Movie Review - A Solid Horror Watch For Fans!

In 2002, Director Danny Boyle, and writer Alex Garland released a zombie thriller unlike anything the world's ever seen in the horror titled: 28 Days Later. It is a film that at the time, was looked upon by many as a game changer for the genre. Quickly growing into becoming a worldwide phenomenon amongst the masses, and geared to this day as one of the most well beloved zombie films to have ever hit the screens. On January 2024, given the demand from audiences across the globe, Sony Pictures had finally announced that a true follow-up in the form of a newly planned trilogy, was in the works with Boyle, and Garland returning at the helm.

The first film of the newly crafted saga in: 28 Years Later was released June 2025. Led by a remarkable cast in Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, & rising star Alfie Williams. This re-imagined sequel is far from anything fans could have ever anticipated. Standing as an immediate successor to the original. While managing in living up to all of the expectations one could have imagined, and then some! Flooded with twists, and turns that will have you blown away, and yearning for more.

What makes this franchise so gut-wrenching at heart, and honestly different in tone from past zombie thrillers we may have come to see, is how grounded in reality the world building feels as a whole. Both in its atmosphere, and characters overall. Creators Danny Boyle, and Alex Garland go on in quickly informing us as viewers that the infected we see are very much alive, but cursed with no hopes of a cure. Instead, Boyle chooses to showcase how the mankind has evolved since the events of the first film. While ultimately revealing how society would need to go about adapting to the greater changes at hand if they are to rebuild civilization.

It is a beautifully written story mainly centered on a family that is forced to be hunters at a time where the rest of mankind has abandoned England. Despite their tragedies, they are each faced with grueling challenges that not only puts them at odds with one another, but also in the end pushes each member in ways that will test their very own humanity.

28 Years Later is unquestionably an excellent continuation of a story that already hits home for many of us. Delving deeper into a reality of just how fast society can collapse if succumbed by the unknown. Experiencing this film in theaters was an absolute joy! Not just because it delivers on its promises, but also how unexpected it catches one off guard in terms of its pacing as well. While the tone as I mentioned can be relatively bleak at best. Boyle still manages to leave room for a bit of humor as well. Lightning up the mood, and making each character we see feel at most humane on screen.

Another name that deserves immense props is none other than make-up artist Flora Moody. Who does a wonderful job creating an utterly terrifying look for the infected that surpasses the design from even the previous installments. It is some of the best work audiences will grow to appreciate once seen in action, and is honestly very affective in helping add suspense to an already horrific heart-breaking tale.

The cast we see on screen, is also nothing short of amazing with each performance both powerful, and engaging as the next. Lastly, what makes this new follow-up so impactful for many watching, is how horrifying humans can be when most vulnerable. Director Boyle keeps viewers locked in on a real-world setting that makes the aesthetic look, and mood feel at best raw yet true in nature. It is wonderfully well-made filmmaking that is practical, as well as innovative. While making use of traditional cinema cameras, drones, and especially iPhones to help create a distinct visual style that works in favor to the overall direction Boyle is aiming for in his storytelling.

All in all, 28 Years Later is a solid horror watch for the fans, and earns the immense praise its been given by critics ten times over. Along with positing itself as a great return to the genre that will hopefully push for deeper conversations on not just a reflection on ourselves, but also our evolution as a society. I for one cannot wait to see what Boyle, and Garland have in store next. Truly worth the time! Definitely one of the best to come all year!
